The Best Ways to Lose Weight

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

The increasing rate of obesity in the world has led many people to question their weight and their health.  It is a known fact that as weight increases, the risk for adult onset Type 2 diabetes increases.  But many people are unsure how to begin a diet regimen that is effective without starving themselves.  Below I have listed some of the best ways to begin the weight loss process without turning into a rabbit and eating only lettuce.

First, stop drinking soda.  I cannot stress enough how much eliminating this one thing can decrease your weight.  Soda is basically empty calories.  There is no nutritional value in it, and it is not good for your teeth or your stomach.  And no, replacing it with a diet soda is not necessarily going to help either.  Soda contains large amounts of sodium, which makes you retain water, thus increasing your weight.  If you want to see that scale budge, exchange your soda for iced tea if you need the caffeine, or just plain water.  This will help flush out your body and have the added benefit of cutting out 200 calories per can you do not drink.

Next is the dreaded portion control.  Diet companies such as Weight Watchers have been espousing this idea for years, and with good reason.  By cutting down on the amount of food you eat, you cut down the amount of calories you intake.  If the amount of calories you eat is less than the amount you use in everyday activities, you will lose weight.  The question is how to do so without feeling hungry all the time.  Eat small meals.  If you eat small meals constantly your body does not have the opportunity to reach the stage of being extremely hungry, which is when most people over eat.  The other key to portion control is to put smaller amount of food on your plate, so that you do not mindlessly eat more food than your body actually needs.  By limiting what you can eat when you aren’t paying attention, you can cut calories and notice when you are actually feeling full.

I know nobody wants to hear this, but add in a bit of exercise each day.  This doesn’t mean you need to spend hours at the gym.  By parking farther away and walking into a store you add in a few hundred yards to your daily routine.  Next, you take the stairs instead of the elevator.  More calories gone!  You will be amazed how quickly it adds up when you do a little bit at a time.  No treadmill required.  And if you really want to get crazy, go out and take the dog for a walk.  He will appreciate the attention and you will appreciate the smaller pant size in a few weeks.

Finally, this is the ultimate rule in losing weight.  If you know it is bad for you, and you know you like eating it, don’t keep it in the house!  If you want chips and they are in your house, you are going to eat them.  Good news is that people are lazy.  If you have to get dressed, get in your car, and go to the grocery store to buy those chips, chances are you are not going to eat them because you don’t want to expend the amount of energy needed to go get them.  Same rule of thumb goes for cookies, soda, etc.  I’m not saying that you should permanently keep them out of your cupboard, but for the most part, don’t buy them and you will not eat them.

I hope this has given you some simple ideas on how to begin losing weight.  These are simple changes that can make a world of difference, not just in your weight, but also in your health and quality of life.

Review of Current Diet Trends

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

So you have made the decision to lose weight.  Congratulations!  But now you are barraged with a slew of fad diets that all claim they will help you take the weight off.  How do you tell fact from fiction?  Read on and I will summarize some of the current diet trends and whether they will actually help or hinder your efforts.

The most current fad diet to hit the market is the Acai Berry Diet that was so skillfully advertised on the Oprah show.  This diet is all about the abilities of the acai berry to increase metabolism and reduce your appetite.  But the acai berry is really not a diet by itself.  Added into an already healthy diet it can help to increase metabolism and enhance your digestion.  Because the berry is a natural antioxidant it is good for you, but do not rely on it as your only weight loss tool.  Based on the current evidence, adding in blueberries to your current diet would probably give you the same antioxidant boost, and at a cheaper price.

Another diet available at your local bookstore is the Atkin’s Diet.  Dr. Atkins developed this diet based on the glycemic index of certain foods, mainly carbohydrates.  Dr. Atkins states that by lowering your glycemic index you can lose weight.  There are four stages to this diet: 1) Induction 2) Ongoing Weight Loss 3) Pre-maintenance 4) Maintenance.  Induction removes most carbohydrates including fruit, pasta, rice, alcohol, and sweets.  Then adding in a little bit of good carbohydrates, such as fruit, in the ongoing weight loss stage.  The pre-maintenance and maintenance stages are all about maintaining your weight and finding the balance of Atkins approved foods that you will continue to eat.  This diet will help you to lose weight, but many people cannot maintain the lifestyle of limited carbohydrates for long.  If you need to jump-start your metabolism this is the diet to choose, but if you just need to lose a couple of pounds this is not a sustainable diet for you.

Another diet that focuses on low carbohydrates is the South Beach Diet.  The South Beach Diet moves you from eating bad carbohydrates and fats, such as baked goods, to good carbohydrates and fats like fruit.  Like the Atkin’s Diet the South Beach Diet has phases that you follow to achieve the full benefits.  The first phase involves the elimination of all carbohydrates for a couple of weeks.  Then as you begin to lose weight you move into phase 2 where you incorporate good carbs, like fruit, back into your diet.  The final phase is a maintenance phase where you reach your goal weight and continue to eat the balance of carbs and fats you have individually decided on.  There are a lot of good reports about the South Beach Diet and it has worked for many people.  But again, the maintenance of the lifestyle with little carbs throws many people off of the proverbial wagon.

The final weight loss system I would like to discuss has also been the most successful.  Weight Watchers espouses healthy nutrition and balanced living.  The program gives people a point system to help them count their calories, and provides meals that are full meals but without any empty calories.  They also provide a large amount of support throughout the weight loss process and beyond to help you get the weight off and keep it off.  This is personally one of the best weight loss mechanisms I have seen in terms of people keeping the weight off.  Because it allows you to splurge in controlled amounts you will not feel cheated out of treats.  This is not just a diet, but also a way of life, which is really what being healthy is all about.

How to Fight Obesity, and how is it Caused?

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Are you wondering how to lose weight and escape from the category of obese? Obese is used to describe nearly 70 percent of America, and it means you are severely overweight; however there is a way to overcome obesity and it is a fairly simple strategy. It involves to principles that are hard to do, because of addiction, much like nicotine in cigarettes. The two things you must do to lose weight are eat healthy and get lots of exercise. These may be hard to do because we as people get addicted fairly easy to things; therefore it’s hard to overcome fast food, and sugary foods. However I will show you how to eat and feel better and ultimately lose weight, while staying happy!

Firstly you must learn to eat healthy, and maintain a balanced diet that will help you start losing weight. You must try and stop eating foods that are high in sugary concentration, and eat more foods that are high in nutrition, and protein. As these types of foods will help you build up strong bones and help you live a better and healthier lifestyle. Eating healthy foods include not drinking coke, instead try a healthy substitute like water or try to eat drinks that are not loaded with sugar and bad extracts. Try to go for V8 nutrition all vegetable drink, this will help you start losing weight, and tastes good.

Secondly you must plan to go to the gym frequently as it is beneficial to your health, to maintain a steady workout and exercise plan. You can talk to a counselor or trainer and they can help you choose a plan that is right for you and three can help you measure some of the aspects of your body. These include BMI which is your Body Mass Index, which calculated how much of your body is made of fat, and how much of that fat needs to be lost in order for you to start looking healthy, trim, and skinny.

Thirdly and most importantly is for you to get motivation and to do that you must make a schedule detailing all the times and day that you are going to go o the gym, and or get healthy. This will help you greatly manage your time, and help you decide whether or not you have time that day to go exercise. It’s very important to make schedules it will remind you of your commitments and tell you how much work you will have to do to achieve your goals.

Trust me the work will pay off when you start looking nice, and you feel good about yourself. It’s easy to lose track of your goals, but remember how much better you’ll look in that new dress, or how you will feel when you are skinnier. This is what should motivate you to do your best and lose weight, never stop trying to maintain your goals, to be on the path to lose weight.

Do you Want to Lose Weight?

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

If you want to lose weight you must follow some fundamental principles, such as maintaining a healthy diet, getting lots of exercise and making sure to avoid unhealthy and fatty foods. The first rule is to eat healthy, and this can be done fairly easily, all you have to do is make sure to stay away from sugary, fatty, and fructose rich foods; that will cause your body to gain weight.

Secondly you must make sure to keep your body healthy by getting lots of physical activity, and making sure to exercise regularly. This can be done easily; all you have to do is making sure that you have exercise equipment available to you; this can be at home or sign up for a gym membership. Gym memberships are fairly cheap and will provide you with the workout and equipment you need to keep your body slim, and nice.

How to work out and exercise?

In order to work out and exercise properly one must set and compile a schedule in order to maintain a consistent workout, There may be day that you don’t want to work out and this will result in weight gain, as working out is crucial to keeping eight off, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you can motivate yourself to work out and exercise, then it should be easy to start losing weight.

Remember that losing weight can be fun, as long as you stay committed to losing weight and are on the right track. If you don’t make a schedule and a plan then it’s going to be harder  for you to keep to your schedule and to lose weight, however if you have a schedule planned out and ready it will be much easier to lose weight.

If you start doing only one of the two aspects of losing weight, the results will not come immediately. For example if you exercise regularly, but don’t eat healthy food regularly then you won’t be able to lose weight as fast. Also other negative consequences can happen, for example body builders eat lots of meat to build protein in their cells and muscles, However if you eat lots of meat, you will start to GAIN weight after exercising due to muscle weighing more than fat. Thus if you want to LOSE weight then you must eat a healthy diet in order to to keep the program and maintenance of your body steady.

It’s easy to lose track of your goals, but remember how much better you’ll look in that new dress, or how you will feel when you are skinnier. This is what should motivate you to do your best and lose weight, never stop trying to maintain your goals, to be on the path to lose weight.
